Copper Harbor, Michigan

Copper Harbor in most Northern town in Michigan. It is a major tourist attraction.  In summer, many summer residents return to enjoy the cool Lake Superior breezes.  Fort Wilkins State Historical Park is a popular destination for summer tourists. Fall offers one of the best fall color displays the state has to offer. Copper is also a popular destination for snowmobilers in the winter.  The city has several gift and fudge shops, a gas station, and a few bars. Ferry service is available to Isle Royale.

Large antique doll and Indian artifact collections, displays of the copper mining boom days and Lake Superior shipwrecks, plus displays of old tools, rocks, minerals, old bottles, insulators and civil war items.

Copper Harbor Lighthouse and Tours, Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, Copper Harbor, MI 49918. A narrated cruise through Copper Harbor's once bustling port takes you to one of Michigan's oldest lighthouses. Restored to its original 1866 beauty overlooking the majesty of Lake Superior, you are met by a staff member from the Michigan Dept. of History who will assist you through the interior complete with furnishings from the 1866 era. Please allow one and a half hours for the round-trip tour of the Lighthouse, new Maritime Museum, with easy walking paths leading to more historical artifacts and Michigan's first commercial copper mine site. Exhibits in the 1848 lightkeeper's dwelling show why the light tower was built, how the lights worked, who maintained the light and the overall context of the site. The 1866 lighthouse features exhibits that recreate the lives of keepers and their families during the early 20th century. Accessible only by ferry from the Copper Harbor Marina mid-May thru Mid October.

Delaware Copper Mine, US-41, Copper Harbor, MI 49918. Phone: (906) 289-4688. Located 12 miles south of Copper Harbor, the Delaware Copper Mine dates from 1847-1887. Eight million pounds of copper were removed from the five shafts that reached a depth of 1,400 feet with ten levels. The tour takes you down shaft No. 1 to the first level. You'll see pure veins of copper exposed in the walls of the mine. Model train, rock & mineral and mining displays, antique engines, petting zoo and walking trails. Museum and gift shop at the mine site. Open daily June thru October. A Heritage Site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park.

Estivant Pines [Natural Attraction], Copper Harbor. This nature sanctuary is located 2.5 miles south of Copper Harbor. The 400-acre nature sanctuary is home to the oldest living trees in Michigan, several of which more than 125 feet tall, and more than 200 years old. It is also the home of many unique animals and rare plants. The area contains two foot trails, namely Memorial Grove, a 1.4-mile trail, and Cathedral Grove a 1.5-mile path. These trails are open to the public year round, accessible by automobile in the summer and snowshoe in the winter.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park offers camping and day use facilities and features a restored 1844 military outpost and one of the first lighthouses on Lake Superior. Restoration work and development began in the 1930s. Costumed interpreters demonstrate the history of the Keweenaw Peninsula fort.

Manganese Gorge Falls [Waterfalls], Manganese Creek, 1.5 miles southeast of Copper Harbor.

Two miles of hiking/biking trails. One mile of groomed cross-country ski trail. Snowshoeing. A Heritage Site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park.
