Gwinn is surrounded by woodlands and 52 lakes offering wonderful opportunities for berry picking, biking, boating, camping, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, golfing, hiking, hunting, swimming, and water skiing.  There are hundreds of miles of trails available for peaceful walks along lakes and streams in the surrounding forest. Winter is a special time in the Gwinn area, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, shoeshoeing, and ice fishing are all popular winter activities. Gwinn was founded by William Gwinn Mather as a model town to accomodate miners in 1906. It was named to honor his mother Elizabeth L. Gwinn.
