Welcome to the City of Houghton...a nice place to live. Houghton is located within the Keweenaw Peninsula a four season scenic wonderland. Surrounded by water with numerous inland lakes and streams, this area provides some of the finest outdoor recreation in the Midwest, and with an annual average of 180 inches of snowfall, this area is a focal point for winter sport enthusiasts. Houghton is also home to Michigan Technological University, recognized as a national and international leader in engineering, science, and business. Add to this modern, well-staffed and equipped schools from pre-school to adult education, and you have a nice place to live. Isle Royale’s physical isolation and primitive wilderness challenged human use for centuries; ironically today it has become the Island’s main attraction. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, visitors come to experience this island park through hiking its trails, paddling its inland waterways, exploring its rugged coast, or venturing into the depth of its shipwrecks.

A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, 1400 Townsend Drive, Michigan Technological University, 5th Floor EERC Building, Houghton, MI 49931. Since it's inception in 1902, the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum has housed one of the premiere crystal collections in North America and has showcased the world's finest display of minerals from Michigan's famous Lake Superior Copper District. Because of this, in 1990 the Michigan State legislature designated the museum as the "official Mineralogical Museum of Michigan." A Heritage Site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park.

Emily Lake State Forest Campground, Baraga Field Office. Phone Number: (906) 353-6651. Houghton County - Access is off of the Emily Lake road. The road junction is 22 miles SW of Houghton on M-26 or 13 miles NE of the M-38 / M-26 junction. Emily Lake Road is paved for the first half mile and gravel past that. The campground is 2 1/2 miles south of M-26. Phone number indicated above is for the Management Unit. Sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations. 9 sites for tent and small trailer use located on the south shore of Emily Lake. This is a rustic campground with vault toilets, hand pump well. It has barrier free facilities. The campground is open from May through November. Emily Lake: Emily Lake is a deep 54-acre lake.
