Hubbell was close to many mines, making it a logical location for several stamping mills, where heavy stamping machines crushed copper-bearing rock to free its copper. Waters of Torch Lake were used flush out the copper and rock onto mill equipment designed to separate copper from rock. The Quincy, Osceola, Tamarack, and Ahmeek mines all had stamp mills here, and C&H also had a smelter.
