Iron Mountain, Michigan

Iron Mountain is located on US-2 in Dickinson County. It is the county seat of Dickinson County, in the state's Upper Peninsula. It was named for early discoverer’s claim of a mountain of iron which marked the discovery of the Menominee Iron Range in Upper Michigan. After the Civil War, the Chapin brothers went north from Lower Michigan and bought forty-acres which included the site of the present city which was founded by Dr. Nelson P. Hulst and laid out in 1879 with the opening of the nearby Chapin Mine. Except for 1932-33, this mine produced iron ore continuously form 1880 until its closing in 1934. US-2 (running concurrently with US-141) connects with M-69 at Crystal Falls, about 20 miles northwest, and with US 8 at Norway, about six miles east. US 141 north merges with US 2 just east of the city. US 141 continues south into Wisconsin. M-95 connects with Kingsford just to the south and with M-69 east at Randville about 14 miles north. Iron Mountain host a few points of interests such as the Millie Hill bat cave, The Cornish Pump, and is located adjacent to Pine Mountain ski jump/ski resort. It shares Woodward Avenue with the neighboring town, Kingsford. In addition, Iron Mountain is known for its pasties and Italian cuisine.
