Keweenaw County is the most sparsely populated county in the state of Michigan. Its rocky, forest-covered landscape jutting out into Lake Superior makes it extremely attractive for both summer and winter forest-based recreation activities. State facilities such as Fort Wilkins State Park and the county historical society's museum facilities are a foundation for a growing heritage tourism niche. The economy is ranked number one in the state of Michigan as being dependent on tourism. It has a very small manufacturing sector based on the screw machine industry and the forest products industry, which harvests both solid wood products and wood fiber from the privately-owned forest lands of the county. The development of the former Calumet Air Force Station (a former radar site) offers non-traditional opportunities for the county's economy.
