Kinross was founded as a station on the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (the Soo Line) in 1891. It was named after a town in Scotland by the Scottish settlers who had moved south from Canada. Nearby farms grew hay, grain, and vegetables to market in Sault Ste. Marie. Kinross was home to Strategic Air Command’s Kincheloe Air Force Base during the cold war. The base was renamed Chippewa County Internation Airprot after the bases closure. It is also home to Michigan's biggest prison, Kinross, whose 113 acres hold over 1,200 prisoners.
