Mohawk is located on US-41 in Keweenaw County. Named after the site of the Mohawk Mine of the Wolverine - Mohawk Mining Company. In 1896, Ernest Koch, a lumberman, chanced to find some native copper here. Exploration by Joseph E. Gay proved the value of the find, and in 1898, the Mohawk Mining Company was formed and began operation. The village developed with the mine and was named from it. Storekeeper George H. Petermann became its first postmaster on March 1, 1901. Mohawk was the name of an Indian Tribe.
