Left Foot Charley Winery & Tasting Room, 806 Red Drive, Village at Grand Traverse Commons, Traverse City, MI 49684, Phone: (800) 515-1081. Tasting Room Opening July 2007. Left Foot Charley is a relatively new winery in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Owner/winemaker Bryan Ulbrich has spent the last decade feeding an obsession around Northern Michigan's fantastic white wines. In that time he has crafted some of the most acclaimed wines East of that other Left Coast - you know they call it Cali-something- they grow great avocados there. Anyway...in 2004, he helped rejuvenate a friend's struggling Riesling vineyard and created 200 cases of his first wine under the LFC label. He and his wife Jennifer are in the midst of creating Northern Michigan's first urban winery in the center of the historic Northern Michigan Asylum now known as The Village. Ulbrich is quietly gathering the region's top small vineyards and will showcase them in the new facility. Left Foot Charley = Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Gewurztraminer from Northern Michigan's finest vineyards. Why are we focusing on Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Gewurztraminer? Because they thrive in Northern Michigan. We are working with the area's most significant small vineyards, ranging in size from 1-6 acres. We believe that this quartet of grapes exemplify why Northern Michigan is a world class wine growing region.

Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve [Underwater Preserves,  Scuba Diving], P.O. Box 384, Traverse City, MI 49685, Phone: (989) 600-8623. The Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve is the state of Michigan's 12th designated underwater preserve. The GTBUP encompasses the east and west arms of Grand Traverse Bay from Cathead Bay in the northwest over to Norwood in the northeast. The Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve is an all volunteer non-profit 501 (c)3 which maintains an underwater preserve in Grand Traverse Bay. The purpose of the preserve is to promote underwater recreation and Maritime Heritage & Tourism in the Great Lakes.   The waters of the GTBUP contain shipwrecks from the 1800s up to the 1970s, historically significant cultural sites such as one of the oldest dock remains in Michigan, as well as fun dive sites like a 1970s Ford Pinto. The Michigan Underwater Preserve system was created in 1980 through legislation supported and largely drafted by Michigan sport divers. Since then, divers have ensured that their sport will remain a high-quality activity with stiff penalties for disturbing the shipwrecks and their artifacts. It is a felony to remove or disturb artifacts in the Great Lakes. Those caught removing portholes, anchors, anchor chain, deadeyes, blocks, or other “souvenirs” will have their boat, car, and equipment confiscated immediately and will face up to two years imprisonment and stiff fines.
